HORTICULTURE PLANT IDENTIFICATION: FOLIAGE
HPL041 Video
The student and home owner alike will be interested in the wide variety of foliage plants presented in this video.  Close-up views and in-depth evaluation of 22 foliage plants are included.  An experienced horticulturist provides the scientific and common name, identifying characteristics, propagation techniques, environmental enemies, specific culture, and uses for the following foliage plants:  Aglaonema, Sprengeri Fern, Parlor Palm, Spider Plant, Grape Ivy, Croton, Coleus, Jade Plant, Spotted Dumbcane, Red Edge Dracaena, Devil’s Ivy, Benjamin Fig, Rubber Plant, Cutleaf Philodendron, and Swedish Ivy.  35 minutes.

HYDROPONICS:  AN INTRODUCTION TO SOIL LESS AGRICULTURE
HPL045 Video
This video presents production, economic, and scientific facts about plant growth using hydroponic techniques.  Specific topic areas include the history of hydroponics, economics of production, growing techniques, considerations for greenhouse construction, raising seedlings, pest control, harvesting, and marketing.  30 minutes.

PLANT DEFENSES
HPL079 Video
Plants, being rooted in one spot, have developed a host of ingenious protective devices:  spines and thorns; insecticides; and chemicals that interfere with hormone production in insects.  Of course, plants are not the only organisms to adapt.  The hungry insects, birds, or other animals that feed off the plant adapt to its devices, developing chemical antidotes or camouflaging their appearance.  28 minutes.

PLANT IDENTIFICATION
HPL083 Video
Introduces the viewer to the identifying characteristics of foliage, and then moves on to stems and branches, flowers, scents, fruit, growth, habits, and more.  It also explores the identification of dormant deciduous plants.  Students will discover techniques for learning both the common and botanic names of plants, and how botanic names are interpreted.  Beginners and experienced horticulturists will benefit from the wealth of information presented in this enjoyable program.  27 minutes.

PLANT MOVEMENT AND TRANSPORT
HPL090 Video
Intricacies of internal and external plant movements are explored.  Xylem and phloem are studied and the internal movements are described.  Time-lapse video illustrates how materials move.   Osmosis and transpiration are explained.  29 minutes.

PLANT NUTRITION
HPL092 Video
The structures and their functions that enable plants to make food are identified.  Water is given particular attention and animation shows how the xylem conducts water and minerals up through the plant and phloem carries food down.  The two major types of soil are explained.  29 minutes.

PLANT PROPAGATION, VOLUME 1
HPL094 Video
Four popular methods of propagation — by seed, by division, by bulbs and tubers, and by one of the newest and most promising methods — micropropagation.  22 minutes.

PLANT PROPAGATION, VOLUME 2
HPL095 Video
Demonstrates three methods of propagation — cuttings (hardwood, semi-hardwood, softwood and herbaceous), layering and grafting and budding.  20 minutes.

PLANT TISSUE CULTURE SERIES
HPL101 Video Series
This video series includes two Videos (HPL102-HPL103) and a Teaching Guide.

PART I:  PLANT TISSUE CULTURE
HPL102 Video
This video presents a good introduction to what tissue culture is.  You will see a wide variety of ways it is being applied today to improve products, conserve resources and significantly increase crop productivity.  You’ll explore exciting developments that would have been regarded as science fiction just a few years ago — gene transfer, embryo rescue, and encapsulation.  Then you’ll visit a lab and learn the purpose and uses of common equipment.  You’ll also get a look at the four stages of the tissue culture process.  21 minutes.

PART II:  PLANT TISSUE CULTURE TECHNIQUES
HPL103 Video
After a brief review of the four stages of tissue culture covered in Part I, the tissue culture process is demonstrated with the African violet and the Syngonium.  These are both good subjects for beginners, since they are easily propagated by this method.  After going through the process, some inexpensive alternatives to equipment and materials are shown so you can successfully undertake tissue culture on a budget.  20 minutes.
