PCBs IN THE FOOD CHAIN
Video
This program shows how the effects of marine pollution move up through the food chain,
as the tiniest plankton absorb poisons and pass them up the chain, poisoning those who
feed on them. Thus dolphin blubber shows traces of PCBs in concentrations 100,000
times greater than the sea in which the dolphins lived, because the toxic substances are
long-lived and accumulate in body tissue.

SEAS UNDER SIEGE
Video
Toxic contamination is found off all coastlines throughout the industrialized
world. This program looks at some of the sources of this pollution and some
of its consequences: polluted beaches, 6,000 Baltic seals dead of a viral epidemic
engendered by dioxin, and inedible English sole in Puget Sound. The program is a
loud cry of warning, with detailed documentation for proof, that the opportunities for
remedial action are growing rapidly slimmer. 56 minutes.

THE TIDES OF TIME
Video
This program explores the short-term fight to save endangered coastlines and the
long-term implications of the so-called greenhouse effect, which portends a
gradual and continual worldwide increase in temperature, resulting in a swelling of the
Earths oceans, erosion of coastline and flooding of many of our great coastal
cities. 26 minutes.

THROUGH FISH EYES
Video
A different kind of look at water pollutionnot the long-distance, far-reaching
overview, but the close-up fishs eye view of the stuff that smells up, heats up,
fouls up, and kills the things that make water the crucial support of life. The
immediacy of this view makes this one of the most persuasive explanations of the need to
clean up our waterways and keep them clean. 30 minutes.

TROUBLED WATERS: PLASTIC IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT
Video
Presents a clear and concise picture of the many ways that plastics can find their way
into our oceans, of the danger this plastic poses to marine life, and of the actions being
taken by concerned citizens, government agencies, and industry associations to prevent and
control the problem. 29 minutes.

UNDERSEA OASES: THE SCIENCE OF HARDBOTTOMS
Video
Plunges viewers to the Continental Shelf between North Carolina and Florida for a view
of the perplexing rocky outcrops called hardbottoms. Surrounded by sandy flats, the
crumbling ledges of these rocky cliffs are topped by algal meadows that attract an array
of marine life. Through footage taken from submersibles, and by SCUBA divers,
scientists guide viewers through the hardbottom ecosystem and their ongoing
research. 14 minutes.

THE VANISHING LANDS
Video
Eighteen thousand years ago with the end of the last ice age, the slow warming of the
earth began and the water began to rise. Three thousand years ago the Chesapeake Bay
reached its current shape. While in the last century sea level rise has accelerated,
the bay waters appear to have risen at a rate twice the worldwide average. Sea level
is rising because land in the bay area is sinking. This sinking is due to long-term
geologic changes and withdrawal of groundwater for agricultural and other uses. This
program tells the story of sea level rise and offers viewers a beautifully illustrated
documentary of social and environmental impacts. 30 minutes.
