BAMBOO, THE MIRACLE GRASS
FRS203
Bamboo is a highly renewable and versatile resource with thousands of everyday uses.  More and more products made from it are meeting the needs of people in the developing world.  As the world’s fastest growing plant, it seems abundant, but consumption is slowly exceeding the natural supply, placing some forests in danger.  This program examines a network of projects investigating ways of increasing the production and quality of bamboo in Asia.  It also looks at the faces of people who depend on bamboo in their daily lives.  22 minutes.  Also available in French.

CHIPPER USE AND SAFETY

FOREST FRAGMENTATION:  ISSUES AND IMPLICATIONS
FRS227 Video
Briefly examines some of the potential landscape scale effects of dispersed clearcutting patterns.  Suggests that alternatives such as aggregated cutting patterns may reduce negative impacts to sensitive components of forest ecosystems.  Points to the need to keep management options open until comprehensive landscape management guidelines can be developed.  Includes a question-and- answer session to address commonly-held concerns.  18 minutes.

FUELWOOD—PART I.  INTRODUCTION AND SAWING
FRS256 Video
Presents overview of each phase of the fuelwood process.  Reviews grading, sawing, splitting, seasoning and palletizing, circular saw, and safety procedures.  17 minutes.

FUELWOOD—PART II . SPLITTING, PALLETIZING AND IDENTIFICATION
FRS257 Video
Discusses procedures, techniques and safety measures for splitting logs into blocks of proper size, building a pallet and palletizing your seasoned wood, how to assess the species, age and value of logs including red oak, white oak, ash, aspen, sugar maple and birch.  17 minutes.

FUNDAMENTALS OF FORESTRY
FRS259 Video
Topics include pine identification, rate of growth, selective thinning, tree value, wood products, wood identification, site index, cull tree, removal, woodland suitability, and compass and pacing.  30 minutes.

MANAGING YOUR WOODLOT
FRS271 Video Series
This is a three-part series (FRS279-FRS281) which is accompanied by an illustrated manual.

1. HOW IT GROWS
FRS272 Video
This video describes how a woodlot grows with help from nature and people.  The manual contains sections on important forestry concepts, how forests begin, and forest development.  Provides short quizzes for each section.  23 minutes.

2. HELPING IT GROW
FRS273 Video
This video explains how a woodlot can be managed.  It shows tree species of economic value and individual growth characteristics affecting the economic value of trees.  It emphasizes safe harvest practices.  The manual contains a pictorial guide explaining desirable and undesirable characteristics of trees, how to select crop trees, and how to release crop trees.  24 minutes.

3. BUILDING ROADS
FRS274 Video
This video illustrates how to access woodlots using minimum standard roads.  It shows roads being built and those already constructed.  It discusses control points, grade, drainage planning with maps, layout, construction, and how to handle water and maintenance.  The manual lists 20 important steps for successful planning, implementation, and maintenance of good minimum standard forest roads.  19 minutes.

NATURAL ENEMIES OF FOREST INSECT PESTS
FRS278 Video
This video program explores the beneficial impact of some diseases, parasites, and predators in dampening potential outbreaks of defoliatory insect pests in forests.  Interviews with forest scientists and researchers help explain how current research data point to the importance of such natural enemies of insect pests as viruses (BT), wasps, ants, and birds in natural regulatory processes.  The implications of these research findings are discussed, including potential impacts of silvicultural practices on natural enemy communities, and techniques for preserving natural enemy populations through better management of their food, shelter and living space requirements.  23 minutes.

PESTICIDES IN FORESTRY:  THE BEHAVIOR OF PESTICIDES IN
THE ENVIRONMENT

FRS286 Video
Describes the movement, persistence and fate of pesticides in forest environments.  Discusses interactions that occur between pesticides and the environment and the role that these two factors play in determining the fate of pesticides following application.  Designed for use in pesticide application training sessions, but will be of interest to anyone trying to understand how pesticides behave in the forest.  Includes a detailed instructor’s guide and viewer’s summary.  29 minutes.

PESTICIDES IN FORESTRY:  RISK ANALYSIS
FRS287 Video
Couples the basic ideas of environmental behavior of chemicals and toxicology to introduce the underlying concepts and principles of risk analysis.  Topics include:  margins of safety, probabilities of reversible and irreversible effects, potency, and ecosystem recovery.  Two step-by-step sample calculations are conducted to illustrate the quantitative basis of risk analysis — one for reversible effects, and a second one for cancer.  Includes a detailed Instructor’s Guide and Viewer’s Summary.  46 minutes.

PESTICIDES IN FORESTRY:  TOXICOLOGY
FRS288 Video
This program introduces viewers to the basic principles of toxicology as they apply to the use of forest pesticides.  Includes discussion of the dose-response relationship and gives examples of the interaction between pesticides and biological systems, and how these interactions affect toxicity.  Defines key terms and concepts necessary to converse more effectively with the public, forest workers, and experts about pesticide impacts.  Includes viewer summary, handouts, and detailed instructor’s guide with discussion questions.  32 minutes.

PRACTICE TREE IDENTIFICATION
FRS292 Video
Includes 40 hardwood trees and timber/forage relationships; each specimen’s leaves and bark shown up close; an identification key after the 4 classes consisting of 10 specimens.  25 minutes.

SOIL COMPACTION ON FOREST LANDS
FRS302 Video
An in-depth look at causes of forest soil compaction, its effects on productivity, and some management alternatives for reducing compaction and restoring compacted lands.  Focuses on recent compaction research.  32 minutes.

TACKLING PRODUCTIVITY IN MECHANIZED LOGGING
FRS307 Video
This Video training package blends real-world logging operations with the concept of teamwork, communication and cross-training.  The program shows common “time bandits” which afflict many mechanized operations, and encourages the audience to identify these delays in their own operation.  19 minutes.

THE TREE FARM
FRS319 Video
Follow the management practices of a modern tree farming operation from planting to the commercial sale of trees.  This video takes an in-depth look at the various facets of tree production, including:  planting, digging, pruning, irrigation, and shipping.  An on-site interview with a tree farm operator provides useful insight into production of high quality, salable trees.  20 minutes.

TREE IDENTIFICATION
FRS323 Video
Includes hardwood identification and timber/forage relationships.  Emphasizes key characteristics to help students identify 40 different species of hardwood trees, timber and forage.  Close-up footage of bark and leaves of each specimen allows students to see important identifying characteristics.  19 minutes.
